Chat and Online Communities

Definition in Plain English:

Chat online means chatting via text, voice, video or instant messenger on the internet.

Chat and online communities are groups of people who have a certain place they can log into and chat with any number of people at the same time. These chat and online communities have different names, chat on different subjects or just general chatting. Instant messenging means you can send an alert to another person on line and chat at that moment if they are online also.

Article #1
Online chat can refer to any kind of communication over the internet, but is primarily meant to refer to direct 1 on 1 chat or chat rooms, using tools such as instant messaging applications—computer programs, Internet Relay Chat, talkers.

A chat room or chatroom is an online site in which people can chat online (talk by broadcasting messages to people on the same site in real time). Sometimes these venues are moderated either by limiting who is allowed to speak (not common), or by having moderation volunteers patrol the venue watching for disruptive or otherwise undesirable behavior.

Chat systems come in a variety of styles ranging from text only messaging systems to fully immersive 3D environments. By far the most common form in recent times is instant messaging (ICQ, AIM, MSN, Jabber, etc). Some would argue that these are not truly chat rooms as they are characterized by being one on one conversations with people in a users "buddy list". However as the popular media has confused the issue, this brief description is included here. Recently these systems have started to incorporate the ability to chat with multiple people simultaneously, but these are still conversations restricted to the users buddy list, not a cocktail/block party style venue as true chat rooms are.

Chat rooms usually have stringent rules that they require users to follow in order to maintain integrity and safety for their users. Particularly in rooms for children, rules usually do not allow users to use offensive language, or to promote hate, violence and other negative issues. Also chat rooms often do not allow advertising in their rooms or flooding, which is continually filling the screen with repetitive text. Chat rooms usually have a list of rules for users to obey when they chat online
