The World Wide Web & the Internet

Definition in Plain English:
The World Wide Web is the most well known service on the Internet. The World Wide Web is made up of "Web servers" (computers) that store and transfer "Web pages," which are actually documents that contain text, graphics, animations and videos to anyone with an Internet connection.

The Internet is a network, like your phone system, that connects computers around the world via the TCP/IP protocol. So the Internet is the highway that transfers the information, while the WWW, FTP, email and other services are the types information that travel on that highway.

What do you need to access the internet. Once you have your computer or laptop and have purchased internet access (this can be dial up through a phone line or by cable hookup, similar to what you have for your tv) you will need a program called a Browser. There are several but the most popular are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Netscape. These are free for download on the internet.

-When a site is created on the internet it must have a name so it can be found like "www.thedogsite.com"
-The 'www' indicates a particular host server. www stands for world wide web (which is the most used).
"thedogsite' is the name you picked for your site.
-Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top-level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains, i.e., '.com stands for commercial', '.gov is for government', '.mil is for military', '.net is for network', etc......
-Your site will also have a internet point which is a group of numbers, ie 200.0.1.3. You will not see these numbers on a daily basis.
-Altogether and typed like this:
http://www.thedogsite.com you will have what is called a URL (uniform resource locator) and that is what you type in the blank space at the top of your browser. when you hit the go button or hit the enter key the internet will know where you want to go.
-http:// indicates which protocol to use. http is the set of rules that tells computers on the net how to send files back and forth.

To search the web and find the site you want, you need a search engine. There are several search engines but the most used ones are: Google, Yahoo, WebCrawler, AltaVista, Dogpile, Lycos, MSN.

All you have to do is type in your URL and hit go or if you don't know the name of your site you can type in a search term, i.e., 'dog' and the search engine will find you all the sites that have the word dog in the name.

You will hear the term HTML. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language or in laymens terms HTML is the software language used on the internet's World Wide Web. It is used to create web pages. Professionals and very techy people can write their webs using html but for the ordinary person, you can buy or find free software that will write the html for you.
